Countries, Languages & Contact Details

Build on introductions by talking about countries, nationalities and languages, introducing another person, naming everyday objects, using Armenian articles and plurals, reading larger numbers and prices, and understanding an address, phone number, and email address.

1. A new classmate

Begin with a short conversation. The goal is to understand the person before studying the patterns separately.

A
Բարև ձեզ։ Որտեղի՞ց եք։ Barev dzez. Vorteghits’ ek’? Hello. Where are you from? Pronunciation: dz is blended; gh is throaty; ts’ and k’ are aspirated.
B
Ես Իսպանիայից եմ։ Yes Ispaniayits’ em. I am from Spain. Pronunciation: ts’ is aspirated.
A
Ի՞նչ լեզուներով եք խոսում։ Inch’ lezunerov ek’ khosum? What languages do you speak? Pronunciation: ch’ and k’ are aspirated; kh is a strong throaty sound [x].
B

Որտե՞ղ եք ապրում։ Vortegh ek’ aprum? Pronunciation: gh is throaty; k’ is aspirated.

2. Countries and continents

Connect country names to a simple location pattern, then use the same structure to say where places and people are from.

Եվրոպա Yevropa Europe
Ասիա Asia Asia
Աֆրիկա Afrika Africa
Հյուսիսային Ամերիկա Hyusisayin Amerika North America
Հարավային Ամերիկա Haravayin Amerika South America
Ավստրալիա Avstralia Australia
Որտե՞ղ է Իտալիան։ Vortegh e Italian? Where is Italy? Pronunciation: gh is voiced and throaty.

Որտե՞ղ է Հայաստանը։ Vortegh e Hayastanə? Where is Armenia? Pronunciation: gh is voiced and throaty; ə is a short “uh”.

Իտալիան Ասիայում է։ Italian Asiayum e.
Հայաստանը Եվրոպայում է։ Hayastanə Yevropayum e. Pronunciation: ə is a short “uh”.

3. Talk about yourself and another person

Notice the present-tense pattern rather than memorising separate sentences. With “I”, the auxiliary is em; with “he/she”, it is e. Armenian nationality words do not change for male and female.

Ask and answer

Ի՞նչ ազգության եք։ Inch’ azgut’yan ek’? What nationality are you? Pronunciation: ch’, t’, and k’ are aspirated.
Ես իտալացի եմ։ Yes italatsi em. I am Italian. Pronunciation: ts is one blended sound.

Introduce another person

Նա իտալացի է։ Na italatsi e. She is Italian. Pronunciation: ts is one blended sound.
Նա Երևանում է ապրում։ Na Yerevanum e aprum. She lives in Yerevan.

Որտե՞ղ եք ապրում։ Vortegh ek’ aprum? Pronunciation: gh is throaty; k’ is aspirated.

4. Classroom objects and articles

Eastern Armenian does not use gendered articles. For a beginner, learn the simple contrast: մի (mi) before a noun for “a/an”, and -ը/-ն attached to the noun for “the”.

A / an

մի գիրք mi girk’ a book Pronunciation: k’ is aspirated.
մի գրիչ mi grich’ a pen Pronunciation: ch’ is aspirated.
մի պայուսակ mi payusak a bag
մի աթոռ mi at’orr a chair Pronunciation: t’ is aspirated; rr is strongly rolled.

The

գրիչը grich’ə the pen Pronunciation: ch’ is aspirated; ə is a short “uh”.
պայուսակը payusakə the bag Pronunciation: ə is a short “uh”.

5. Ask for a word and talk about quantities

Now make the classroom vocabulary usable. Ask what something is called, recognise plural forms, and notice an important Armenian rule: after a number, the counted noun normally stays singular.

Սա ի՞նչ է։ Sa inch’ e? What is this? Pronunciation: ch’ is aspirated.
Սա հայերեն ինչպե՞ս է կոչվում։ Sa hayeren inch’pes e koch’vum? What is this called in Armenian? Pronunciation: ch’ is aspirated.
Սա մի գրիչ է։ Sa mi grich’ e. This is a pen. Pronunciation: ch’ is aspirated.

7. Address, phone and email

One last production round

Use fictional information and answer these prompts aloud. Nothing needs to be entered or saved.

  1. Pretend to be a fictional learner from Spain: say where you are from and which languages you speak.
  2. Introduce a fictional third person: say their nationality, city, language, and what they are learning.
  3. Point to an imaginary book and ask what it is called in Armenian.
  4. Say “a book”, then “the book”, then “three books” using the Armenian patterns from the lesson.
  5. Read 45, 72, 100, 200, and 1000 aloud in Armenian.
  6. Act out the fictional registration dialogue and ask for name, address, phone number, and email address.
Words to memorize

Recall the core words before you finish

These are the most useful words from the lesson. Think of the answer first, reveal it, then tell the app whether you remembered it. Words marked “Again” return later in the same drill.
